Step-by-step installation instructions for Kangas Sound Editor QI version 4.2.0

Here are the steps for installing Kangas Sound Editor QI version 4.2.0 on Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. If you get stuck on any of the steps, you can use the installer help forum to get help.

  1. You need to have JSE (Java Standard Edition) 6 or later on your computer in order to run Kangas Sound Editor QI 4.2.0 on Mac OS X, and JSE 7 or later for Kangas Sound Editor QI 4.2.0 on Windows/Linux. Where to get it from depends on your computer's operating system:

    • Windows Click here
    • Mac OS X If you are running Snow Leopard, the chances are you already have Java SE 6 on your computer. If not, then you can use the Software update feature (available on the Apple menu) to try and update to Java SE 6. For Lion, Mountain Lion or Mavericks, update "Java for OS X 2014-001" results in Java SE 6 (1.6.0_65) being installed. If it isn't available as an update, then the chances are that your Mac OS X system doesn't support it. This could be due to the operating system you are running not being up-to-date enough, or not having the right kind of CPU – from what I can make out, Java SE 6 is available for 64 bit Intel-based Macs from Mac OS X 10.5.2, and for 32 or 64 bit Intel-based Macs from Mac OS X v10.6.3.
    • Ubuntu From the Ubuntu Software Centre, enter "Java 7" in the search box. then select and install "OpenJDK Java 7 Runtime" from the list that results.
    • Other Linux distros Try googling «Your Linux distro» "java 7", to find advice for installing Java 7 on the distribution of Linux you are running. A link to Java on Linux downloads that may prove useful for you is here.
  2. If you haven't already done so, download the Kangas Sound Editor QI installation program. This can be done from one of the download links under Software on the Kangas Sound Editor QI download page.
  3. If you are downloading the Kangas Sound Editor QI installation program as a .jar file, you may find it is renamed by your browser on download to have an extension of .zip. If this does occur, you will need to rename it back to have a .jar extension.
  4. Start the Kangas Sound Editor QI installation program by (double) clicking on it.

If you are using Ubuntu, right-click on the .jar file in Nautilus and select Properties, then select the Permissions tab and check "Allow executing file as program". Then, right-click on the .jar file again, and then select "Open with OpenJDK Java 7 Runtime".

For Linux from the command line, try:

    1. cd «download directory»
    2. java -jar kangas-sound-editor-qi-install-4.2.0.jar
For Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5+, Mountain Lion, Mavericks or later, it may be necessary to temporarily override Gatekeeper. This can be done by right-clicking (or control-clicking) on the Kangas Sound Editor QI Install icon, and selecting 'Open' from the menu that appears. You will need to confirm that you wish to proceed, and may need to enter the administrator password. Alternatively, you could set the Gatekeeper security setting to 'Anywhere' from the 'Allow apps downloaded from' section of the General tab of the dialog accessed from System Preferences >> Security & Privacy – just remember to set it back to what it was after installing Kangas Sound Editor QI.
  5. Go through the installer wizard, reading the instructions carefully at each stage. Proceed through the installer wizard, selecting an installation type (new or upgrade), and supplying values for the installation path and path to the database files. If changing the path to the database files from the default, use a path that your user account has write access to (such as your home directory) – otherwise Kangas Sound Editor QI will be unable to save your compositions and other data to the database. If you are upgrading from an earlier version of Kangas Sound Editor QI, you will also need to supply the path where the existing database files are located. You will eventually reach a page which summarises your choices; pressing the Next button will commence the actual installation.
  6. Towards the end of the installer wizard, the opportunity to create desktop shortcuts is given on Windows and Linux. This only works to a degree on Linux; for instance, on Ubuntu a desktop shortcut is created when using the Gnome desktop, but unfortunately not with the proper icon – however, the menu item has one.

On Mac OS X an application bundle is created; if you accepted the installer program's defaults, this can be found at:
Applications >> Kangas Sound Editor QI >> Kangas Sound Editor QI.app
  7. Start Kangas Sound Editor QI by clicking on its icon.
  8. Select the Graph >> Create menu option. Now click on the search button next to the 'Base on graph:' field. In the "Find Graph" dialog that results, press the "Go" button. If a number of graphs appear without errors, it is likely that installation has been successful. Well done Sport!
